Breeding, breeding, breeding

What is wrong with everyone these days breeding everything that has working parts?  The shelters are full to the brim with dogs and a the majority are healthy and adoptable and at least a third of those are purebreds.  With all of those wonderful dogs, why are people still breeding?......greed.......ignorance..both.  Then when they can't sell their dogs they just dump them at the shelter.  Kohl, Carter, Rowan and Baby were all dumped by their breeder who continues to breed and when his current set of puppies is too old to sell quickly, they will be dumped too as the sad cycle continues.

Just because your dog is purebred doesn't mean it should be bred (even if it has papers).  Don't breed or buy while there are dogs of your breed that are healthy and wonderful waiting to die in the shelter.  If you are compelled to breed, you should rescue at least as many dogs as you produce and should only produce when you have enough homes waiting for your litter.  You should only breed to IMPROVE the breed, not line your pockets or pay for the purchase price of your dog.

We have several dogs in need of foster homes, please think about rescuing instead of buying or rescuing instead of breeding.

The move is complete

The move to Richmond is complete for one half of ASCPBR, the other half is still hanging on in NC. We are in a temporary hiatus for taking in new dogs though we still have some faces up for adoption. Most are courtesty posts for other rescues (thank you for saving the bully dogs) and a few are ours (Chloe, Kohl, Rowan, and Carter). We still need a foster home for Buddy so we can bring him into the program. He is a nice boy and we are lucky that his finder is doing the best she can to hang onto him while we look. We are very thankful that Deputy and Small Girl got adopted as they were in shelters on limited time.

Brindle Female

Brindle Female was euthanized this morning a sad end to her brief life. The saddest part was that her owner knew she was there [at the shelter]. She was a nice girl who needed a second chance. It is so sad that so many pit bulls suffer this same fate every day. Rest in Peace

Packing up

Packing up for the big move. Half of Annabelle's Second Chance is relocating to Richmond VA for a job. It is a very busy but exciting time as we bring things to a close in Winterville NC and plan to start again once we arrive in Richmond. It will take a while to get set up and in a position to re-open this half of the rescue for fostering and adoptions but we hope to get back to it soon.

Adopting a dog

Always make sure that everyone involved in the decision agrees on the adoption from the age of the dog to the breed of dog. That includes purchasing a dog as well. A dog isn't a piece of furniture to discard when it no longer matches the decor or lifestyle. It is a living creature that deserves careful consideration before making that committment. Dogs live between 13-15 years, so make sure you are ready to feed, walk, clean up after and love a dog for that long before you do it. You aren't doing the dog any favors if you aren't able to stick with it.

Dog stabbing goes unpunished

Because it was a pit bull? Despite witness reports to the contrary, the tying of a pit bull to a tree and stabbing it to death has been ruled self defense.

a Sad state of affairs

When these two teens move on to larger victims....people have been warned. Multilation and killing aren't "just a phase" they are a sign of serious problems.

April Showers and May Flowers

May is here and most of the dogs we are trying to help for the moment have foster homes with the exception of little Lady whose owners just walked out of her life at her time of need. She is sitting in a vet clinic with a broken back leg and a mounting bill. We and another group offered financial assistance to help with her leg if they agreed to spay and not breed her. They agreed but then left her, didn't pick her up or pay her remaining bill. Poor girl, this is the SECOND time they have broken her leg. No-one can dispute that she is much better off without them but we have no foster care. This little 6 month old puppy deserves better.
